The following tribute was written by Dr. Fred Minifie, a close friend and colleague of Dr. Hochberg. Since his death in 1999, the Foundation has received more than $38,000 in his memory to support its Dreams and Possibilities Campaign.
Our friend and deeply admired colleague, Dr. Irving Hochberg, devoted much of his professional life to preparing students for teaching and research careers in communication sciences and disorders and for clinical practice in the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology. In his role as chief executive officer of the graduate program at City University of New York, he used his scholarship, intellectual leadership, and administrative genius to develop one of the top doctoral programs in the nation. He participated directly in the education of many of this academic discipline's national leaders.
His infectious good will, quick wit, warm personality, and educated palate touched many of our lives on a very personal level. He unabashedly contended that life was too short for cheap wine.
To many of us, Irv was a substantial human being, a mensch, and a beloved friend and colleague. Irv's unstinting commitment and dedication to the highest standards of academic preparation for doctoral programs in our discipline set a standard for other programs to emulate. His perspectives are well reflected in his publications and in the many formal presentations he made before the Council of Academic Programs in Communications Sciences and Disorders and at American Speech-Language-Hearing Association-sponsored conferences. He often articulated the importance of a good scientific background for entry into our field and to basic and applied research as the sine qua non for the future of the discipline of communication sciences and disorders.
Irv's goals are reflected in the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation's Dreams and Possibilities Campaign. The campaign's goal is to raise $1 million for scholarships to educate strong doctoral candidates, equipping them to provide future leadership. Another $1 million is being raised to support research activities by university faculty members, thereby adding new knowledge to our basic and clinical sciences. More than $1.9 million has already been raised, and there is a strong likelihood that the remainder will also be raised.
We can think of no more fitting tribute to Irv than to give to a campaign that will serve the causes to which he devoted his life. A number of us have chosen to honor Irv and his contributions to our field by making our gifts to the Dreams and Possibilities Campaign in his memory. To date, over $38,000 has been given in this special way. Gifts which support the campaign in this manner will be recognized in all appropriate listings as "in memory of Irving Hochberg."
