With President Bush recently signing into law H.R. 2764, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation has been selected to receive a one-year and one-time Congressionally-directed grant of $263,000 to address the critical shortage of doctoral level students studying in the field of communication sciences and disorders.
The funds will enable the ASHFoundation's New Century Scholars Program to quadruple the number of $10,000 doctoral scholarships it will award in 2008. Now in its 6th year, the New Century Scholars Program is an initiative of the ASHFoundation to support doctoral education and research in the field of communication sciences and disorders.
The special grant will support the doctoral scholarship component of the New Century Scholars Program, which funds strong doctoral candidates who are committed to pursuing a teacher-investigator career in the academic environment at the university/college level. Since its inception, the program has awarded $27,000 to promising doctoral candidates across the U.S.
"We are very pleased that the ASHFoundation will be receiving these funds," ASHFoundation President Dennis Hampton says. "This grant is a huge boost to our New Century Scholars Program, allowing us to extend our reach to approximately 25% of the nation's top doctoral scholars in communication sciences and disorders who will submit applications for funding in 2008." Executive Director Nancy Minghetti added "ASHFoundation donors who supported the early years of the New Century Scholars Program through capital campaign donations can be proud that their dollars and encouragement were the impetus for even greater funding through this opportunity."
