Kenn Apel's letter (March 25) regarding SLP involvement in addressing reading disabilities as part of an intervention plan found me in hearty agreement. SLPs should broaden their expertise and interest with continuing education. In the 1970s I studied with Dee Tyack and Bob Gottsleben and found that the skills I acquired in working with written language greatly enhanced my effectiveness as a speech-language pathologist with students on my high school caseload.
Although I have since shifted my focus to working with toddlers diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, I am grateful that I was able to fill a need in the lives of so many students who would otherwise not have been well-served in such a critical area.
