Supporting Innovation in Communication Sciences
Collaboration for Success Cathy Balthazar, recipient of a 2009 ASHFoundation Clinical Research Grant, is adamant about the necessity for collaboration in research. She is confident that the development and execution—and the fruition—of her current work is dependent on her collaborative relationship with Cheryl Scott, professor of Communication Disorders and Sciences at Chicago's Rush University.
Specifically, Balthazar and Scott, with the help of University of Illinois at Chicago doctoral student Nicole Koonce, are exploring treatment for problematic use of complex sentences in children in the 5th grade and above. Using a treatment protocol involving both metalinguistic and contextualized instruction, they are examining outcomes for effect size and factors that affect response to treatment. The team is also examining the reliability and validity of several measurement procedures they developed to assess children's complex sentence knowledge. Read more.
