ASHFoundation Awardee Works to Develop Interventions for Adolescents Suffering from Brain Injury Angela Ciccia, PhD, Assistant Professor and Clinical Program Director at Case Western Reserve University's Department of Communication Sciences, received an ASHFoundation New Investigators Research Grant in 2003 to support her research in the area of social cognition and brain function. She created a brain imaging paradigm that would mirror what would actually happen in intervention—something that didn't exist at the time. In 2005, she was awarded the ASHFoundation's New Century Scholars Research Grant, enabling her to conduct behavioral and neural network analysis of social information processing in older adolescents following severe traumatic brain injury. This early ASHFoundation funding allowed Dr. Ciccia to move to the next step, and she recently submitted a National Institutes of Health R03 application to study the contributions of working memory to social cognition in brain injury.
Dr. Ciccia says that the power of ASHFoundation funding can not be overstated. "It says that your profession believes in what you are doing. And for someone who is a little uncertain moving into the academic world, a very competitive funding environment, it helps you to get started. The money is tangible, but the ASHFoundation's recognition is invaluable." Read more about Dr. Ciccia's work [PDF].
